Marbles

Marble is a rock composed of calcite (CaCO3) or the combination of the minerals calcite (CaCO 3 ) and dolomite ((Ca,Mg) (CO 3 ) 2 ) and has been created by the metamorphosis of limestone, i.e. sedimentary carbonate rocks. The word is etymologically derived from the ancient Greek verb “ΜΑΡΜΑΙΡΩ” which means “shiny”.

The trade name “marbles” includes, in addition to what geological science describes as marbles, a number of other rocks, which are amenable to cutting and grinding.
